Tree, Early Morning Light, San Jose

Tree, Early Morning Light, San Jose, California, 30 x 21cm, Acrylic on Paper, 17-21:6:2017, by David Lloyd

Acrylic on Paper, 30 x 21 cm, June 2017                                                             This painting was done “en plein air” over three early morning sessions in San Jose, California. It was painted whilst I was staying with relatives in San Jose. I was struck by the strange beauty and shape of this tree and also the beautiful crispness of the morning light in California. I painted it over three sessions because the light would change as the sun rose higher and changed the colours and shadows of the sky and branches of the tree. I built up the detail of this painting by overlaying and adding thin layers of transparent Acrylic paint on top of each other.

Ian Andain Portrait Commission

Ian Andain Finished Portrait 2016

Oil on Canvas, 46 x 60 cm, 2016

This Oil Painting on Canvas was done as a Portrait Commission for the subject’s 70th Birthday in 2017. It was commissioned as a surprise by his brother and was very bravely unveiled at Ian’s 70th Birthday Party in front of many of his friends before he had seen it! I feel very honoured to have been a part of this special celebration. I completed this Portrait from September to November 2016 working from photographic references. I really enjoyed painting this Portrait and I find that changing my subjects and mediums helps to improve my understanding and ability with different materials and techniques. I am very happy with the outcome of this portrait and tried to use new techniques and glaze mediums on it.

Melling Countryside

Melling Canal and Landscape 2015-16

Acrylic on Canvas, 45 x 38 cm, 2015-16

This painting was done as a gift for my mother and based on photos taken on a day out with family in Melling, near Liverpool. My mother asked me to do it for her because she loved the contrasting dark clouds and light reflections on the canal, the magical rainbow and the barges. Melling is a really beautiful area with canals and fields stretching for miles and a lot of barges can be seen sailing along or moored at the sides. On this day there was a thunderstorm approaching in the distance as we walked by the canal, causing the rainbow and the contrasts in the rain laden clouds above. This was a challenging piece due to all of the small details that was built up using thin layers of Acrylic paint that I worked on (along with other pieces) for almost a year. Canals and barges have always been special to me and it was nice to finally try to capture some.
