Mackey

Ink on Paper, 30 x 40 cm,2014
Acrylic and Ink on Paper, 30 x 40 cm, 2014-15

These are two portraits from a few years ago of my good old friend, the legend and all round rad dude behind Lost Art skate shop, Mackey.

The Ink portrait was drawn first and then the colour version was done as I was trying to see how thinned down Acrylic Paint could be added to the Ink drawings. It turned out to be a combination of mediums that is now one of my favourites.

Russ

Acrylic and Ink on Canvas, 20 x 20 x 4cm, 2014

This is a mixed media portrait of my old friend Russ skating in New Bird skatepark in Liverpool. I have been skateboarding for almost 35 years and wanted to do some pictures inspired by it as it’s a huge part of my life. As I had been interested in the drip effect of paint application I thought it could be used to show the movement and momentum of skateboarding in this piece.

Pushing 3

Ink and Mixed Media Collage on Card, 26.4 x 39.2cm, 2020-21

This is one of a series of three “Pushing” self portraits that are “an ode to skateboarding“ or a way of trying to show my love and appreciation for the sport/art form/way of life.

They are based on three photos of myself pushing that my skater/ photographer friend Neil Wade took of me(see link to his work below).

Rose

Ink on Paper, 53.5 x 39 cm, 2019-20

This Ink on Paper drawing was started from life at an event called Artists Bridge The Gap organized by the Red Room in Taipei City, Taiwan. Each year the Red Room hold live drawing and painting events and invite artists and non-artists to create Artworks together. The aim is to introduce and encourage a creative environment where people can make Art together, and it’s always a lot of fun!

At the event in 2019 we took turns to model for each other and had a few friends sit as models for varying lengths of time.

This model was Rose and this drawing was started from life at the event in 2019 as she posed for around an hour. I chose to draw her from this angle as I liked the shape of the shadows created by her raised knees. After the event I stored the unfinished picture in my studio and recently worked on it again from photos taken on the day. I enjoy working in Ink on paper as I can gradually build up areas in layers of hatched shading to add definition and shape to a picture.

This model was called Zak and he is a musician who posed with his acoustic guitar. He sat for around an hour at the 2019 event and afterwards I stored the unfinished picture at home. Recently I began working on it again to add more depth and detail and completed it in my studio.
