Twilight, Lake Taupo

Oil Pastel on Black Paper, 14.5 x 20.5 cm, 20/1/17

This Twilight picture was done from inside our room at the Gables Lakefront Motel after the previous Acrylic sunset piece (because it was too cold to draw outside!) I love the colours in the sky on a clear evening just after sunset and try to draw, paint or take photos of it whenever I get the chance. I like to see the contrast of the dark clouds and the last light of the day fading to black.

Sunset, Lake Taupo

This was painted from a picnic bench outside the Gables Lakefront Motel, Lake Taupo, New Zealand after a day of hiking. This is the largest lake in the country and the mountains that can be seen in the background are Mount Ruapehu, the Volcano and Tongariro National Park that are featured in my other pictures. It was painted as the sun was setting and the warm colours of the sun were reflecting on the water. It was a clear sky with only a few clouds and it actually got quite cold by the time I was finishing this piece as the temperature drops quite a lot in the evening.

Beach and Coast, Sunny Day, Palau

Acrylic on Paper, 30 x 21 cm, 18/11/2016

This painting was done at midday on a beautiful sunny day. The contrast and reflections of the bright rock cliffs against the water and trees really attracted me to this scene. The white rocks of the cliffs seemed to shine even brighter as the sunshine got stronger and the greens and blues of the ocean sparkled and mixed together. As with a lot of my paintings I will re-arrange or edit some of the parts to make a composition that I like, or to show something that I want. In this case I have arranged the Palm Trees (that were there) to try to add depth and distance into the picture.

Coastline, Sunny Day, Palau

Oil Pastel on Black Paper, 14.5 x 20.5 cm, 16/11/16

This is an Oil Pastel version of the same view as the previous painting made on a bright sunny day. The light was beautiful on this day and the colours and reflections of the trees, mountains and rocks were really vibrant as the sun illuminated them. For this picture I blended some of the colours and areas and also tried to use the original oil pastel marks to show the vibrancy and abundance of the tropical plants and vegetation on the rocks.

This is a painting of the view from Room 322 in our second hotel called The Palau Royal Resort. It was done around midday as we avoided the peak heat of the day and enjoyed the natural beauty (I am finally learning how to avoid sunstroke!) It was an amazing spot with the beautiful ever-changing turquoise green and blues of the ocean lapping against the rocks of the coastline and the beach. Paradise indeed! I love to try to capture the different colours and reflections found in tropical waters as they shine, mix and get deeper as the sunlight affects them. Palm trees are also very special and interesting to me as I had never seen them in Liverpool, England before and I love their forms, shapes and ability to survive.
