Vocals

Ink on Brown Paper, 19.5 x 27 cm, 2015

This is the last Ink drawing done during this very creative jam session. This drawing features a female vocalist as she was sitting down against the wall singing. In the limited space with so many people joining in, it was very interesting to see which position people would find to play and sing as they changed instruments and moved around.

Girls Rocking

Ink on Brown Paper, 19.5 x 27 cm, 2015

This is an Ink drawing of two girls joining in the jam and rocking out. One playing guitar and the other singing.

Jamming

Ink on Brown Paper, 19.5 x 27 cm, 2015

This is the second drawing done whilst watching and listening to this group of friends jamming together in Taipei City, Taiwan. It was a very creative and experimental atmosphere with all of the musicians frequently changing instruments and positions as they bounced ideas off each other. It was a fun challenge to try to quickly capture their shapes and likenesses as they played.

Ches

Acrylic and Ink on Canvas, 24 x 30 cm, May 2014

This is an Acrylic and Ink on Canvas portrait of my friend Ches. This piece was done as a timed 4 hour practice in preparation for the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year Competition in Edinburgh in 2014. I had my Self-Portrait 2014 chosen to join the televised contest and wanted to try out different combinations of materials and sizes that I could use on the day.

Copenhagen 2013

Ink on Canvas, Approx 66 x 66cm, 9 pieces each 20 x 20 x 4cm, 2013

This is the complete Copenhagen 2013 piece. It’s a series of nine Ink portraits on Canvas that was drawn from snap shot photos taken over two days of skating and travelling with this crew in Copenhagen and Malmo in 2013. I met up with this amazing group of old and new friends for a couple of days full of great skating and laughs! I tried to take spontaneous photos without people knowing where possible to try to catch interesting expressions or moments.

Frost, Copenhagen 2013

Ink on Canvas, 20 x 20 x 4cm, 2013

This is the last of nine Ink on Canvas portraits that make up Copenhagen 2013. A portrait series of a rad crew of skaters drawn from spontaneous snap shot photos taken over a few days in Copenhagen and Malmo.

This is the legend that is Frost, the mighty Squeezebox Bob! Looking a wee bit tired!

Marc, Copenhagen 2013

Ink on Canvas, 20 x 20 x 4cm, 2013

This is the eighth of nine Ink on Canvas portraits that make up Copenhagen 2013. A portrait series of a rad crew of skaters drawn from spontaneous snap shot photos taken over a few days in Copenhagen and Malmo.

This is Marc, the bass playing ripper in Copenhagen train station.

Tommy Cooper

Ink on Paper, 42 x 59.4 cm, 2013

This Ink Drawing is part of a Portrait series of my favourite T.V. characters and personalities that I remember strongly from my childhood. I remember my Dad was a big fan of his and I enjoyed how he would pull silly faces and always seemed to be laughing. He was always laughing at himself onstage. I started this picture by drawing it out in pencil and then when I was satisfied with size, placement and likeness I added Ink over the top to add shadow and depth. I left the original paper around the edge bare to use it as a border and to give it an effect like a print.

He was an incredible comedian onstage and a tortured soul battling many demons off it.

The Mighty Saguaro

Acrylic Paint on Paper, 35 x 25cm, 2001
Acrylic Paint on Paper, 35 x 25cm, 2001

I recently re-found these two Acrylic Paintings that I did around 20 years ago when I first arrived in Taiwan. I had brought my sketchbooks with me and had recently done some sketches of my friends band The Mighty Saguaro while they were practicing. If I remember correctly the practise studio was in Dale Street, Liverpool, although I could be wrong! It’s a fun challenge to draw musicians as the movements make it extra tricky! I used the quicker sketches I had done of each musician to compose these two pictures, moving the figures around.

Ferry Cross The Lakey

Acrylic Paint on 300gsm Paper, 38 x 26cm, 2021

The name of this picture makes me smile and is inspired by the famous “Ferry Cross the Mersey” song by Gerry and the Pacemakers. It is a famous song from the 1960’s in my hometown of Liverpool. This painting is a larger version of the previous “A Warm and Misty Afternoon” picture painted in Acrylic Paint on 300gsm Paper. After mostly cloudy and misty weather during our stay I was excited to paint the bright sunshine colours on this warm afternoon. Like the previous painting it was done over a few late afternoon sessions after we had returned from hiking or biking by the lake. I didn’t want to just paint a second version of the same painting so I decided to include Ida Saou and one of the small ferries that takes people around the lake, as from around 8.30 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. they are constantly visible on the water. Due to the ferry in the picture, while editing, writing about and naming all the pictures done during this trip this name suddenly came to me, and it’s my favourite one for a while!
